Meet the Team

At Octopus, our mission is to make the best gear possible to enable the modern adventurer to go everywhere. Adventures come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and for the Octopus team, the last year and a half has been the greatest adventure of our lives. Of course, I’m talking about starting, managing, and growing Octopus Outfitters.

Without a doubt, the best part of the past 14 months is the people. After all, an adventure is only as good as the people you take it with, and we’re blessed to have an awesome network of family, friends, mentors, fans, and customers supporting us every step of the way.

Recently, I realized that it’s been a while since we introduced ourselves, and there’s a lot of new Octopus community members who might not know much about us. That’s why this week we’re going to introduce each member of the Octopus team and ask them a few questions so you can get to know us all a little better. (Spoiler: There’s only 3 of us, so this post will be short and sweet)

Heidi Engebretsen

Heidi is a Communications and Graphic Design student from Chicago, Illinois. She’s in charge of all our social media and helps with website design and promotions. Basically, she’s the reason everything on our Facebook, Instagram, and webpage looks so good

Q: Where’s your favorite travel destination?

A: "I’ve been all over the world but my favorite place to travel is Torch Lake, Michigan. I go there every summer with my family, and over the years we’ve made the best memories together."

Q: What do you do for fun?
A: "I love to go on hikes, road trips, and travel as much as possible. (and of course, I love hammocking!). When I’m not traveling, I like to work on design projects or coordinate weddings at a venue down the road."

Q: What does “adventure” mean to you?

A: "Adventure is more than just going somewhere crazy and doing something fun. Adventure to me is about learning how to live curiously, take risks, and find excitement and wonder in your everyday life."

Jesse Hamilton

Jesse is an Entrepreneurship and Music student from Nashville, Tennessee. Hes in charge of product development at Octopus. Basically, this means he works on designing, testing, and improving our products to be as amazing as possible. If you have any ideas for products Octopus should make, Jesse’s the guy to talk to.

Q: Where’s your favorite travel destination?

A: "Moab, Utah: This is one of the most special places to me because of the beautiful landscape and plenty of places to go hiking, camping, and off-roading.  With both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, there are huge areas of protected lands with incredible rock formations that really let you soak in Gods creation.  The landscape is so different from where I grew up in Tennessee."

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: "Anything outdoors puts a smile on my face. I love being with friends, riding my motorcycle, and playing music. Expressing myself through piano and guitar music is one of my passions."

Q: What does “adventure” mean to you?

A: "Adventure to me means trying something new and unexpected that reconnects me with myself.  Camping and living outdoors is an adventure because it’s simple, unexpected, and challenging.  A dream adventure for me is to travel for a month across the country with minimal plans, living in a camper or a tent completely off the grid."

Eric Reid

Eric is a Marketing and Entrepreneurship student from Chicago, Illinois. At Octopus, Eric works on marketing and building partnerships with retailers, sponsored organizations, and gear reps.

Q: Where’s your favorite travel destination?

A: "Yosemite National Park in California. A while back, my family stopped in Yosemite Valley for a few days on a road trip, and I remember it was the most beautiful place I’d ever been. One day, I’ll go back and hike up Half Dome and explore the park more."

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: "In my spare time, I love playing sand volleyball or Spikeball. I probably play sand volleyball 8+ hours per week. I also really like exploring new places whenever I can. I’m not a Texas native, so everything in Texas is still new to me, and I love being able to see and learn new things."

Q: What does “adventure” mean to you?

A: "Adventure is all about discovering the limits of what you’re capable of. If you never try something that scares you to death, you’ll never learn how much you can really accomplish. That’s why we use “go everywhere” at Octopus so much: because going everywhere is the only way you can ever discover what your real purpose is and how you can achieve it."
